WHALESHARK in BURMA!
Liveaboard trip 03/01/09 – 12/01/09
BURMA SAFARI
Mermaid I
It’s always a great experience seeing a mighty Whaleshark, and this time was no exception, as it came slowly flying above us like a Boeing 747, at Submarine Rock in Burma.
However, what will stay with us from this trip, surely is the dive we did with three Manta Rays playing with us for more than half an hour. This was up north, at a rocky outcrop named Black Rock. Some of us had caught a glimpse of one the previous dive, but since it just passed by in the distance, nobody really hoped for any real action. So it was a nice surprise when the Mantas decided to put on a show!
We were quite lucky indeed with the big stuff this safari, and found two huge Nursesharks sleeping in a cave at one of the Twin Islands. Through in a few Leopard Sharks, an Eagle Ray, 15 Whitetips and more Marble and Jenkin’s Rays than we could count, and this would make an excellent trip in anyone’s book.
But it didn’t stop there – we were also blessed with a nice collection of Seahorses, Ghost Pipefish, Pineconefish, Frogfish and rare Nudibranchs.
A couple of relaxing, colourful dives in the Similans, and it was time for us to start heading back to Phuket.
