There is nothing wrong with seeing a big Manta ray. As a matter of fact, they are my favourite animals! But I think we were all more impressed by the size of the Nursesharks we found on this trip to the Mergui Archipelago in Burma. The first two were sleeping in the Shark Cave, at Three Islets. Since the cave is kind of small, we got to see the sharks up close and personal. They REALLY looked huge, biggest one beeing 3.5 meters long!

At Stewart Rock, we found a Bamboo shark under a rock, and a school of massive trevallies in a feeding frenzy in one of the many swimthroughs at this divesite.

We also did a beach visit at the beautiful and remote Ba Wei Island.

Up north, at Black Rock, we encountered two Eagle rays, another one of these big Nursesharks and several Grey reef sharks. An atmospheric sunset dive, with hundreds and hundreds of Purple-foot anemones closing up for the night, ended this day.

Of the nightdives, the one at Western Rocky stands out. We had an inquisitive Leopard shark, an enormous Marble ray and a Spanish Dancer, complete with its onboard Imperial shrimps.

But also the daydives here were really good. Leopard sharks, Grey reefs and a couple of turtles. And, yeah, this was the place with the big, 4-meter, Manta Ray!

The last day in Burma, we visited the temple in Kaw Thaung, the border town. A bit of a climb up there, but well worth the effort.

A relaxing dive in the Similan Islands, with colourful soft corals ended this safari.
