The highlight of this trip was probably when we found ourselves in the middle of a feeding frenzy at Takat Toko, in Komodo National Park. A pack of Giant Trevallies rounded up smaller fish at a coral bommie, and as the feast started, White-tip Sharks and Dolphins joined in. Quite spectacular!
But this was far from all of the sightings this very lucky, and pleasant, trip with liveaboard Mermaid 1. We were also blessed with lots and lots of Manta Rays. In no less than seven dives, we got the chance to interact with these fantastic animals! We saw them feeding at the surface, mouths wide open, getting sorted out at cleaning stations or just playing around in the currents. For several of the guests onboard, these were the first Mantas, so very happy faces (and a few celebration bottles of wine) at dinner.
As for the slightly smaller stuff, nobody could be disappointed either. Pretty much the whole catalogue of Nudibranchs were found over the eight days. Rare Zebra Crabs, Pink Squat Lobsters, a stunning, purple, Rhinopias and a miniscule Denise Pygmy Seahorse added to the critter-experience.
Funniest event was when we found an absolutely HUGE Frogfish at Cannibal Rock, bouncing around over the reef. Now, the poor thing doesn’t have a swim bladder, so it’s not that easy for it to make a graceful appearance, but we just couldn’t help laughing our regs out.
